Plastic Surgeons

By Lisa Jordan

These days there is a trend in Newport Beach where many Newport Beach plastic surgeons are gaining patients. Consumers search for surgeons both under the terms “Cosmetic Surgery” as well as “Plastic Surgery.” So, is there a difference between the two, or are they interchangeable? Interestingly enough, there is a difference between the two, so read on.

What Cosmetic Surgery is

Cosmetic Surgery is a term that describes the use of surgical and non-surgical procedures to enhance ones’ appearance. It can be performed on face, neck, and body and generally is used to bring about a more youthful look. For many years, cosmetic surgery was the go-to word when searching for an appearance enhancing procedure.

What Plastic Surgery is

Plastic Surgery is more reconstructive in nature and is specifically used to treat face and body defects caused by accidents or birth disorders. It can also be performed on the face, neck or body but the end goal is more functional than cosmetic in nature. These days, the term plastic surgery is used for any type of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery procedure.

Cosmetic Surgeons v.s. Plastic Surgeons’ Training

According to the CACS, and article found here, physicians who want to be cosmetic surgeons go to “medical school, a residency and/or fellowship program, in a surgical specialty, attain a board certification in it, and post-residency training in the area of cosmetic surgery.” The best cosmetic surgeons become certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS). Plastic surgeons go to medical school, then “complete a residency and/or fellowship in plastic surgery, then may become certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Thereafter, if the plastic surgeon would like to do cosmetic procedures, he/she may take steps to gain experience in cosmetic surgery through fellowship training programs, workshops, seminars, lectures, and then get certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery after completing the necessary requirements”(CACS).

Most of us don’t know the Difference

I am sure you have just learned something after reading this blog post. In fact, most of us don’t know the difference between cosmetic surgeons and plastic surgeons. It just seems like the term plastic surgery is much trendier than cosmetic surgery. In fact, according to Google trends and the keyword planner, the term plastic surgery has a much higher search volume than the term cosmetic surgery.

Choose Your Plastic Surgeon Wisely

Now that we know the difference between the two, it’s important to focus on the most crucial information: how to choose your plastic surgeon. If you see a highly significant special on plastic surgery pricing, it may mean that the surgeon is not well known. It may be that the surgeon has to lower pricing because of his bad reviews or results, or possibly it’s a summer special. Whatever the reason may be, price should not be the determining factor when you choose to get plastic surgery. Choose a plastic surgeon or cosmetic surgeon that is Board Certified and has many before/afters, and great reviews. There are few in Newport Beach, Orange County, California that fit this criteria, one being My Look, it’s head surgeon being Dr. Taneja.
